Study Notes 6.1 Finding Ratios

  • A ratio a comparison or relation between the quantities of two or more than item

E.g. There are 5 squares and 3 circles.

The ratio of square to circle is 5 : 3, For every 5 squares, there are 3 circles.

The ratio of circles to squares is 3:5, For every 3 circles, there are 5 squares.

  • The ratio 5 : 3 is read as “5 is to 3”
  • The numbers 5 and 3 are terms of the ratio
  • 5 : 3 is not the same as 3 : 5
  • Always express your ratio in the simplest form ( i.e. 3 : 6 = 1 : 2 )
